School of Biomedical Engineering
The School of Biomedical Engineering at IIT (BHU), Varanasi, is a multidisciplinary center for education, research, and innovation at the interface of engineering, medicine, and the life sciences. Established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) during the Fifth Five- Year Plan in 1978, the School has an active collaboration with the Institute of Medical Sciences (BHU), which is also located on the same campus fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among engineers, clinicians, and scientists
Academic Programmes
- B.Tech.
- The School offers a four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) programme in Biomedical Engineering. Admissions to the programme is through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted by the IITs. The program integrates fundamental engineering principles with medical and biological sciences, providing students with a strong foundation in diverse areas of biomedical engineering, biomechanics, bioinstrumentation, and biological and biomaterials engineering.
- M.Tech.
- The School offers two-year Master of Technology (M.Tech.) programmes in Biomedical Engineering and Medical Devices. M. Tech programmes are designed to provide advanced knowledge and specialized training in emerging areas of biomedical technology. The M.Tech. in Biomedical Engineering has been offered since 1985 and focuses on advanced concepts in biomedical engineering, medical instrumentation, biomaterial technologies, and interdisciplinary research. The M.Tech. in Medical Devices, introduced in the academic session 2025–26, focuses on the design, development, prototyping, and translation of innovative medical devices, with an emphasis on contemporary healthcare needs. Both programmes emphasize advanced coursework, hands-on laboratory training, interdisciplinary learning, and research, preparing students for careers in academia, research, healthcare technology, and the medical-device industry. Admission to the M. Tech program is offered to GATE-qualified/sponsored candidates through departmental-level screening test/counseling.
- Ph.D.
- Ph.D. Admission to Ph.D. programs is made on the basis of national level examination e.g. GATE/NET scores, In addition, there is provision of admitting sponsored candidates from academic institutions, industries and R&D organizations.
