The School of Biomedical Engineering at IIT (BHU), Varanasi, is a multidisciplinary center for education, research, and innovation at the interface of engineering, medicine, and the life sciences. Established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) during the Fifth Five- Year Plan in 1978, the School has an active collaboration with the Institute of Medical Sciences (BHU), which is also located on the same campus fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among engineers, clinicians, and scientists. The infrastructure development of the School commenced in 1985 with the appointment of its core faculty members, laying the foundation for sustained academic and research growth. The School offers the B.Tech. in Biomedical Engineering, the Integrated Dual Degree (B.Tech. in Bioengineering and M.Tech. in Biomedical Technology), the M.Tech. in Biomedical Engineering, and the M.Tech. in Medical Devices. The curriculum is regularly updated to incorporate emerging areas of biomedical engineering, with strong emphasis on laboratory training, design, interdisciplinary learning, and research. The School conducts interdisciplinary research across the diverse domains of biomedical engineering, with emphasis on advancing medical device technologies, computational methods, diagnostics, therapeutics, and healthcare innovation through collaborations with the Institute of Medical Sciences (BHU), other departments of IIT (BHU), healthcare institutions, industry, and international partners. Committed to excellence in education, research, and innovation, the School prepares future biomedical engineers and researchers while advancing technologies that address contemporary healthcare challenges and improve human health.
